Pre-employment Physical and Drug Screen FAQ

Q: What is the procedure for the collection of drug screens and when can I expect to get the results?

A: It usually takes between 24 to 48 hours to receive the lab results; however, it can take longer for results that are positive.

Drug Screen collections can be performed at our office or an on-site location at the employers’ request.  After the specimens are collected they are shipped to a certified laboratory where they test for the drugs that are of concern to the employer.

After examination by the laboratory results are sent to UMFC through means of secure communication. If results are negative, employer representatives are contacted directly. If results are positive than the results must go through the federal mandated Medical Review process.

Q: Should my employee receive a NIDA (Federal) or Non-NIDA (Non-Federal) drug screen?

A: NIDA (Federal) drug screens are mandated by the Federal Government, and must be given to employees who have specific safety sensitive occupations. A detailed list of safety sensitive occupations can be found in 49 CFR Part 40. NIDA drug screens only test for explicit drugs, which are referred to as “NIDA 5”.

Non-NIDA (Non-Federal) drug screens test for the same basic panel drugs that NIDA drug screens test for, however, can also be extended to include further common drugs of concern to employer.

Q: What are the specific drugs that UMFC tests for?

A: There are three standard panels that UMFC offers.

NIDA (Federal) 5 Panel: Cocaine, Marijuana, Amphetamines, Opiates and Phencyclidine (PCP).

Non-NIDA (Non-Federal) 7 Panel: Cocaine, Marijuana, Amphetamines, Opiates, Phencyclidine (PCP), Barbiturates, and Benzodiazepine.

Non-NIDA (Non-Federal) 10 Panel: Cocaine, Marijuana, Amphetamines, Opiates, Phencyclidine (PCP), Barbiturates, Benzodiazepine, Methadone, Propoxyphene, and Methaqualone.
